Notably, the vast majority of calls for help to local fire departments are medical in nature.
The root cause is City Manager Andrew Clinger ordering fire Chief Michael Hernandez to stop paying overtime to keep all of the city's stations open when there are too many firefighters on sick leave or vacation, unless there's a major emergency.
Said Councilman Dwight Dortch, "Now, if they would give us the ability to go to three man crews on the trucks we wouldn't have to brown out any of the stations."
To prevent the brownouts, firefighters suggested the city staff the Skyline and Somersett fire stations with a two person rescue crews, as long as the city would agree to get state licensing to allow 25 firefighters with paramedic training to use those skills in the field.
The cause for the brownouts, not surprisingly, is complicated. But, so far, it has only Pharrell Human Race Nmd Ebay affected two stations, along Skyline Boulevard and in the Somersett neighborhood.
"We haven't changed," said Dennis Jacobsen, the president of Local 731. "I will fight that to the last man. The only way to save money is to layoff that fourth person."
The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, meanwhile, has decided to get state licensing to turn some of its firefighters into paramedics, too.

Right now, Reno firefighters can work as emergency medical technicians in the field but not as paramedics.

signal a return to the debate over how many firefighters should staff each of Reno's 14 fire stations and whether or not the city should allow its firefighters to serve as paramedics in the field.
At the time the federal money was considered a lifesaver, preventing massive fire department layoffs in the wake of Washoe County and ending its 12 year consolidated fire department with Reno.
But less than a year later, the brownouts have returned and so have the politics behind firefighter labor negotiations, despite the city's current contract with Local 731 expiring more than a year from now.
But after Jacobsen requested last month formal negotiations to start over the paramedic licensing, the request was shot down by negotiators on the Reno City Council. And while Jacobsen said such a move would save the city money in the long run, Dortch said it would add to a contact he wants to see cut down in size.
The difference boils down to the types of drugs and procedures they're allowed by law to use when treating someone suffering a heart attack, for example.
What about paramedics?

The city's firefighter union has stood firm on its position that every fire truck roll with four firefighters.
Both stations were closed for less than 24 hours last month, but that could change in the coming months as more firefighters retire and the city begins to figure out what comes after the federal money runs out.
