Mecklenburg County received more than $4.6 billion in domestic travelers' expenditures to lead all of North Carolina's 100 counties. Wake County ranked second with nearly $1.9 billion, followed by Guilford County with $1.2 billion.

"Hospitality has been leading job creation for the county, and that makes such a difference for the people who live here," said Stephanie Brown, executive director of the Asheville Convention and Visitors Bureau. She pointed to the success of the 1 billion impressions CVB staffers were able to garner for Asheville in national media outlets last year.
"Asheville continues to be such an amazing place that people want to visit, and that helps support the independently owned restaurants and retail stores we pride ourselves on," Brown said. "We have sustained our sense of place."
