Key married her partner, Maggie Smith, in a public ceremony in North Carolina in 2007, then legally in Connecticut in 2013.

In 1964, Key moved to Franklin with her husband and young family, then moved to Asheville in 1987.
A prominent advocate of every cause from health care and secondary education to making a better life for LGBT youths, Key's legacy is in every corner of Western North Carolina.

She endowed the Adelaide Worth Daniels Distinguished Professorship in Special Education at Western Carolina University, and received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees from UNC Asheville and from Western Carolina University.
"We are saddened at the passing of Adelaide Daniels Key," said J. William Kinard Jr., senior vice president for philanthropy of Mission Health System and president of the Mission Foundation. "Dr. Key's legacy to this region is immeasurable.
Since then, the airy Victorian house with its 36 bedrooms, four kitchens, porches and spacious living area, has housed almost 52,000 members of patients' families and caregivers.
A two time cancer survivor who lived in Macon County for 23 years before moving to Asheville, Key planned, lobbied and raised funds for more than three years to see her dream for the hospitality house realized.
A longtime political activist, Key opened her own home to events for local, regional and national political leaders in the Democratic Party.
She wrote letters to 1,000 doctors at the time, asking if they'd help support such a place and if they felt there was a need.
Her many public service commitments included serving on the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina and as a trustee and chairperson of the board of trustees of Western Carolina University. She also served as a member of the board of directors of the UNC Asheville Foundation and numerous other local and statewide educational institutions.
The house opened in 1994, named for Asheville physician Dr. Lewis Rathbun, who turned 100 last October. The land, house and fixtures are valued at more than $8 million today.
She sold her stock in the company in 1990 and started the Adeliade Worth Daniels Foundation, which supported causes involving health care and education.
One of the first efforts Key made after moving to Asheville, and one that launched her into the community spotlight, was a Men's Adidas Energy Boost tireless drive to raise funds and support for what is now the Lewis Rathbun Wellness Center, a hospital hospitality house in Kenilworth.

Key established the Key Center for Community Citizenship and Service Learning at UNC Asheville, and the Key School at Carolina Day School, which teaches children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities.
