The scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors. The competition began in October 2012 when approximately 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
These are the high school seniors in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the Adidas High Tops Grey
Last fall, the highest scoring participants on the PSAT qualifying test in each state, representing less than 1 percent of the nation's high school seniors, were named semifinalists, from which 15,000 were named finalists.
Glass, an 11th grade student at Davidson River School in Transylvania County, said she believes that "world peace doesn't only reside in the borders of the United States, but all over the world." She hopes that she will one day help raise the next generation of peacemakers, as she plans to pursue art and eventually transition into child therapy.
Roberson High School: The Air Force JROTC unit was named one of the best of 863 Air Force JROTC units worldwide. The unit has won this award for three consecutive years. The award recognizes the personal growth and accomplishments of the cadets, contributions of the instructors as mentors, and the support of the school and local community.

Thompson, a fifth grader at Immaculata Catholic School in Henderson County, draws her inspiration from nature. "My Mom takes me to the Blue Ridge Parkway and we look out on the mountains and fly kites all the time. It brings me a sense of peace," she said. She aspires to be a mom, a cook and maybe a dentist. For now, though, she enjoys: "Natural surroundings. Warm breezes. Forests. Beautiful views. Fragrance of flowers."
HENDERSONVILLE The East Henderson High School Chapter of the National Technical Honor Society recently inducted the following members: Robert Baird, Tristan Burrell, Larena Capps, Austin Carter, Taylor Estremera, Haley Lively, Mauricio Moreno, Austin Morgan, Mary Prince, Teaunna Robinson, Rocio Robles Rodriquez and Mallory Thompson.

Peace art contest winners announced
Asheville and Western North Carolina schools and students note recent awards and other accomplishments.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced this year's winners of National Merit $2,500 scholarships. Winners in North Carolina included John G. Gregory III, of Asheville School.
North Henderson High School: The Air Force Junior ROTC instructors and cadets earned an overall unit assessment score of "Exceeds Standards," the highest rating attainable during a unit evaluation. By the conclusion of the program, about 8,000 finalists will have earned the "Merit Scholar" title and received a total of more than $35 million in college scholarships.
Her entry was submitted to the National Career Development Association's Career Development Poetry Poster Contest to be judged in the national competition.
The three winners are Kadee Glass, of Brevard; Emma Gates, of Asheville; and Leia Thompson, of Hendersonville.
