"It's something we talked about a few different times," Dollansky said of his partnership with Quiring to stay in the area for the summer. "I was on the Outlaw tour for so long that the competitive side of you wants to compete at the highest level in sprint car racing. But so far, this has been good and it's kind of worked out."

"Absolutely it make me nervous," Dollansky said. "Every time he's on the track, it's a little nerve wracking. You try and put it out of your mind, because you need to just race. But it's a natural thing knowing your son is starting beside you."

With his sights set on a Knoxville Nationals victory in 2014, Dollansky is taking a different approach this season. He's settled into the famous Big Game Treestands No. 7 and is not running the grinding 90 plus race schedule with the World of Outlaws.

That was then. But for now, its not about Indianapolis it's about a shot at the Nationals.

Racing in the area this year also has given him more time to spend with family. That includes racing against his 20 year old son, Garrett, who is also competing at Knoxville. Two weeks ago, the father son duo lined up next to each other at the start of a heat race.

Dollansky spent 10 days at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after doctors performed a seven hour surgery to replace the vertebrae. The accident nearly ended his career, which included a lifetime goal of getting to the Indy 500.

Dollansky's decision to partner with Tod Quiring and Big Game Treestands has paid off as they've won at Knoxville twice already this season. With a Nationals victory as the ultimate goal, the decision to stick around this area seems to be a good one. However, it's also been tough on Dollansky to not go wheel to wheel with the Outlaws each night.

"Yea, absolutely, I think this team can do it," he said of his chances at Knoxville. "We've been close to winning that race a couple of times, but at the end of the day, you need to get the job done. It takes everybody, and we're prepared for it this year."

Dollansky's triumphs in recent years have come in in the wake of a serious accident. He suffered severe injuries in 2003 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway competing in the Freedom 100's Indy Lights race. The Indy Lights are the ladder series to IndyCar and the Indianapolis 500.

The correction didn't happen. Dollansky took a jarring blow into the outside wall, breaking his L1 vertebrae. It took paramedics several minutes to extract Dollansky from the car, and the race was postponed moments later as heavy rain continued to fall.

As Dollansky entered Turn 1 on the ninth lap, rain began to cover the racing surface and he lost control coming out of Turn 2. As the car skidded across the track, Dollansky relied on his instincts and stood on the gas as he would a sprint car, trying to correct the spin.

How does that make father feel?

"We're going to just run the schedule we want this year," Dollansky said. "We want to run at Knoxville and around the Midwest. So far it's something I'm enjoying. We'll be running up at Huset's a fair amount this year."

"That was a great experience, all the way up until race day," Dollansky said. "It's frustrating because when I was testing there, if there was a drop of rain, they made us immediately stop. When I went into Turn 1 on race day, I saw fans in the stands with umbrellas."

Dollansky missed the rest of the season as he recovered. It's a bit of a sore subject for him because of the rain that was falling on the massive speedway at the time of the crash. Unfortunately, his approach to saving it was the exact of what to do in an IndyCar.

"I knew it was wrong to go back to racing, but we did," Dollansky said of the restart on the wet surface. "I tried to save it like I do a sprint car, which I probably got me in trouble. Everything was good about Indianapolis, but it all unraveled on race day."

Dollansky has the next few months to enjoy the family affair before Nationals kick off in early August.

"From the first time I came there, I loved it," Dollansky said of Huset's. "That race track is very unique. It's one of the best race tracks in the world. It puts on some of the best races. It's got a lot of things going for it. It's one of my favorites."
