Artist/designer Martha Skinner (10^10) will speak about the mission of 10^10 and the Exponential Power of Design through simple and beautiful design ideas that address pressing global problems by harnessing the power of the individual within the collective for culturally sensitive local effects that spread globally while connecting people.
Martha Skinner is founder of 10^10, co founder of fieldoffice, assistant professor of architecture at Clemson University, artist and mother. She studies our built environment as a delicate ecology using representation methods that visualize the cycles of life in order to more acutely address temporal, social and environmental issues. Her work includes several Living Maps of cities, which include NY A/V, PROXY_florence, da de los trastos, and BiCi_N. As the 1999 Walter B. Sanders Fellow at the University of Michigan, Skinner developed Notation A/V, a seminar about the merging of drawing and moving image, a method and way of seeing she teaches and continues to develop in her work. Her projects have been exhibited internationally in Austria, Barcelona Florence, Paris, Qubec, Rotterdam, and Venice. Magazine, a Next Generation Award from Metropolis Magazine, a People, Prosperity and the Planet Award from the EPA, inclusion in the 10th Venice Biennale and in the 4th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam. Skinner has degrees in Design and Architecture from the University of Florida and The Cooper Union, as well as in Urban Culture from The Metropolis Program in Barcelona.

Asheville artists take Adidas Eqt Support Adv Olive Cargo on power and place of design
Designer/educator Janell Kapoor (Ashevillage Institute and Kleiwerks International) is concerned with how we humans can design ourselves into a righteous, living relationship with the rest of the natural world that is affordable and accessible to people on a global scale? She will share information about her 15 years immersed in place based design and collaborative building projects using earth, straw and other locally sourced materials. Highlights will include stories from communities who are creatively innovating on the ground in four regions of Spaceship Earth. Learn about widespread people movements, action oriented solutions, and the common quest for happiness and how we belong to Place. Inspiring visuals will be included.
The Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center presents The Power and Place of Design with Asheville based designers Janell Kapoor and Martha Skinner. The evening presentation will take place at the BMC Museum + Arts Center located at 56 Broadway in downtown Asheville at 7:00 pm on Thursday, December 6th. These two talented women will speak about their work and ideas connected to ecological design building and the exponential power of design. Admission is $5 for members students, $10 for non members.

Janell Kapoor is the Founding Director of Kleiwerks International. She is an avid mud mama, global movement builder, designer and teacher whose work has inspired people from over 52 countries to build their own homes with what they have where they are. She led the initial ecological design build trainings in Thailand, Argentina and Turkey, which resulted in the building of educational centers, training programs, businesses, policy change and regional movements of hundreds of thousands of mud people.
