We don't want to be intimidating, we want to be very welcoming."

Ashley will be the general manager of the Asheville Running Co., a new retail shop set to open in mid September in the Pink Dog Creative building, 346 Depot St., in the River Arts District, the building where the Asheville Arts Council now resides.
Although Ashley was a former professional runner who qualified for the Olympic Marathon Trials in 1996 in Charlotte and 2000 in Pittsburgh by running a marathon in 2 hours, 19 minutes, 24 seconds, he has coached everyone from kids to adults, has put on races from 5Ks to 10 miles and said he knows how to appeal to all runners.

It was just down the block from where Fleet Feet, another new running retail running store, will open Aug. 15, next door to Charming Charlie's.
Ashley, who has worked in other retail shops, including South Asheville's Foot Rx Running, is a personal running coach, and coached cross country and track at the Asheville School, said he knows area runners and what they want.

But Asheville Running Co. is one of two new running specialty shops set to open this summer, adding more competition than ever to Asheville's running retail scene a decade after Ashley's one time running shop, Tortoise and Hare, went out of business. Ashley and Asheville trail running champion Mark Lundblad, ran Tortoise and Hare in Biltmore Park from 2002 2004.
"That's along the lines of what the Foys were thinking, too. Originally from Charlotte, they moved to Asheville a few years ago Adidas Energy Boost 3 Esm and met Ashley when their son was running in high school.
