While this is her first hospital visit as an adult, Brooke Spruce did have one other stay at Mission.
"My parents are well familiar with preemies because I was born way (earlier than) her, and they told me they know when they're loved and when they're visited often in the NICU," Brooke Spruce said. "They always do better in that environment. I saw that firsthand this morning."
The couple lives in the Wolftown community on the Cherokee Indian tribal lands. Brooke grew up in the Snowbird community, while Shawn, a member of the Pueblo tribe, is originally from the American Southwest.
baby of 2014 'doing fabulous'
By Wednesday afternoon, the life altering nature of parenthood was sinking in on the couple. An avid runner, Shawn said he went for a long run on Christmas Day and couldn't stop thinking about his future daughter.
The little girl's prognosis is good.
Celeste is their first child and the first grandchild on either side of their family.
"I told the staff here and my family she just had to make a great entrance to the world," Brooke Spruce said with a laugh. "She couldn't wait. She had to come be a part of the world.".
"Thirty years ago I was in this same NICU," she said, referring to Mission's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. "I was born a little early. I stayed here and was Nmd Human Race 2017

"It really occurred to me, and I've heard other people say it: Our children are born to us and they're ours to raise and to protect, but they don't ultimately belong to us," he said. "We just have them for a few years to nurture them and see them into the world as they grow up. I just really thought about that, because I want us to be cognizant of that that we love her, and she's not just our child but a child of the world and of the Adidas Duramo Trail community and our extended families."
"They say after we'd seen her, she slept fabulous," Brooke Spruce said. "It was like she needed to be held and now she's good. I was very exhausted this morning, but it was comforting. I had a comfort feeling just to know she's doing so well."
Naturally, Brooke Spruce was exhausted after the birth Wednesday, and a little worried about Celeste. But an early morning visit soothed mother and daughter.
Celeste remained "content all day" since their early morning visit and made "some major improvements" throughout the day, Brooke Spruce said.
"Growing up throughout my life, every New Year's on TV you'll see these reports about the New Year's babies," Shawn Spruce said. "Never in a million years did I think we'd be in this situation. It's like a movie or something."
"It's my first hospital stay first everything, not just the baby, but the whole experience," Brooke Spruce said. "The Mission people have been phenomenal."
Brooke Spruce works for the tribal government in Cherokee, while Shawn Spruce runs his own economic development firm specializing in Native American communities.
"We came up to see (Celeste), and she was crying," Shawn Spruce said. "You could tell she was uncomfortable. But as soon as Brooke took her into her arms, she just chilled out."
